Yami No Matsuei is a manga series by Matsushita Yoko, which is still running in the magazine Hana to Yume. It was made into a 13 episode TV series, and it is the anime version on which this site is focused (not just because I haven't read the manga, I really love the anime and think it deserves more recognition).

It follows the story of Tsuzuki and Hisoka, Shinigami ("Gods of Death" who reside in the afterworld, Meifu, and work for the summoning department, EnMaCho, which is part of the government there, JuOhCho) whose job is to investigate strange deaths and bring people's souls to judgement. The series is separated into four arcs of 3-4 episodes, each containing a different assignment they undergo. Yami No Matsuei is considered a shounen ai series, due to the degree of the relationships between the male characters.

The series used to be available fansubbed, but now that it's been licensed by Central Park Manga the easiest way to get it is to buy the DVDs. You can even get them in a box set! Now that's convenience! Since I'm a poor student (who spends way more money on J-rock than she should ^^;;), I haven't been able to get them yet, but I've heard bad things about the dub. But it's done by CPM, so that's to be expected. >_>;
